The Farm in the City: Mr.FARMER Cafe

I get frequent assumptions that I live on a diet of pancakes and cafe sweets in Japan, but (once in a while) I actually go out of my way to have salad for lunch. Welcome to Mr.FARMER, a cafe in Tokyo that has successfully gotten lots of people to eat their veggies.

Healthy food, stylish ambience, and full of appropriately sophisticated customers—it’s a trendy place to be even for a neighbourhood like Omotesando. Plus you know a place is really putting itself out there when they serve water infused in three different combinations of fruits and vegetables.

(The only reason why I can’t come to places like this more often is because one salad could buy me a week of meals from the convenience store)

So while I’m here I need to get the best out of it. I had the Cobb salad plate, packed with ingredients and with a fancy arrangement of bread and baked potatoes on the side. My rule of thumb when it comes to salad: the more colours there are, the more likely I am to eat it. It was like eating a collage

And then because I am who I am, I couldn’t stop there and went on to get dessert. Their sweets are a lot more dinky than their massive salad bowls, but I very much enjoyed that stick of tiramisu

It was sunny, so lots of people were taking advantage of the weather and having their lunch out on the terrace.

Since it’s so popular, there was a queue all afternoon.

Health is wealth, which might explain the pricey meals at this cafe. But then everything was delicious, and the atmosphere had a way of making you feel like you belonged in that charming, airy aesthetic. I’d definitely want to go again the next time I want a nutrition splurge

Cute Cakes in Omotesando

Just when you think there can’t be more cafes serving cute desserts than there already are, another appears around the corner.

Glaciel Omotesando

I had this ladybird cake at GlacielladybirdIt’s a cafe hidden away in a quiet lane in Omotesando near the main street, and it has fancy gelato and pastries like these ladybirds. The red one has vanilla ice cream and strawberry sherbet on an almond cake covered with shiny berry jelly.

The yellow ladybird is pretty much the same, but a cream cheese version. Both of them came with a little financier and shortbread with sherbet on the sidesmileWhich I appreciated a lot, because initially I’d expected just a single cake on the plate. Don’t you love sides?!

And this is what the cake looked like inside! Basically a mini ice cream cake with a chocolate face.

There was also a hedgehog cake, appropriately chocolatey and with sherbet inside too. This was my favourite onelove girlNow that summer’s coming and it’s getting warmer I’m really getting in the mood for anything ice cream.

They had other cakes too, like these caramel and mango tarts. Their menu lets you have a set of two or three cakes and they’re all small enough to let you try a bunch and not get full (I mean, just look at how many cakes have already appeared in this post)girl

And this one takes the cake (pun intended; I’ll see myself out). It’s so bright and decorative it’d make an excellent birthday cake if it weren’t for the fact that a candle would probably melt all that colourful sherbet right off the top. I wanted to to eat this but they didn’t have it when I wentcry

And a lego cake too! They’re so cute.

This was a good place for teatimenekoThe cake sets are reasonable enough and the place doesn’t usually seem to be crowded at all. I’ve already been there twice, and I feel like I’d go again just because I want to eat that intense rainbow cake I missed out on. Next time!

Springtime and Matcha Pizza at Max Brenner

My laptop has life support again! Bring out the champagne! (Just kidding. I don’t know how to drink.)

Max Brenner

I mentioned the Max Brenner Chocolate Bar in passing on my blog once, but I’ve been back there three more times since then. Each time at the branch in Omotesando, with an hour-long queue. It’s a pretty justifiable wait though because Max Brenner is the mother of all chocolate shops. And it’s the spring season now! That means new desserts, new drinks, and new excuses to spend your money on chocolate.

The marshmallow chocolate pizza’s always been the favourite child here, but recently they released two more kinds—green tea and strawberrykirakiraThey both come with white chocolate and roasted marshmallows on top of the fluffy pizza base, though I liked the matcha better (maybe it just felt more exclusive getting to eat it in Japan).

The other spring dessert I got was the chocolate egg pavlova! So named because it looks there’s an egg on top of the meringue, but is really passionfruit sorbet on white chocolate. This was delicious, but it was fairly mortifying trying to eat this because the knife just would not penetrate the chocolate and I got lots of crumbs everywheresadBut was it worth all that effort and embarrassing myself? Yes. 10/10 would recommend!

Max Brenner Chocolate Bar

For this season’s drink they have this cherry blossom choctail! Which I tried and was mildly disappointed by just because I couldn’t see the pink part of the smoothie below. If you have a cute pastel pink and green drink that girls would order just to photograph for social media, wouldn’t you want to show it off a little more?! But to give it credit, it did taste good. Actually I ended up finishing it myselfhurhur

Max Brenner Chocolate Bar

The Hug Mug is really just hot chocolate with a cuter name. But I recommend everyone to try one of these because it’s hot and chocolatey (way to go, me) and does kind of feel like a warm hug in beverage form. The best part is, it’s always on the menu! It’s always there for you.

Max Brenner Chocolate Bar

This time I tried the salted caramel hug muggirl loveThat’s proof of my guarantee. Like, it will be yummy. You will love it.

Max Brenner Chocolate Bar

Another year-round item at Max Brenner Chocolate Bar is their chocolate chip cookie, which is huge and literally half the size of my face (I held it up just to measure). It was chewy and crumbly and fulfilled every cookie craving I might have had for the foreseeable futurelove

I’m always impressed every time I visit Max Brenner because everything is delicious and photo-worthy—highly important requisite—and people are willing to spend a chunk of their day waiting in line outside the storenekoMost of the time the majority of customers I see are girls, with the occasional boyfriend thrown into the mix. Once there was a couple sitting next to me and they actually ate two whole chocolate pizzas between the two of them. Intense dating.

But the pizzas are really that good, so I probably wouldn’t be above doing that myselfdiet neko
