Dominique Ansel Bakery Japan

One of my goals for living in Japan is to find as many animal-shaped pastries as possible. I’m working on itkira kiraLast week I went to the famous Dominique Ansel Bakery (you know, the cronut guy?) and had this insanely cute Maneki Neko choux pastry. It’s only on the menu in Japan, so that’s a good reason to come to the bakery heregood

You definitely can’t miss it, because there’s a life-sized cartoon Dominique Ansel  standing outside the bakery. How kawaiihappyI like how they have 3D props behind, like the batter in the bowl and the guy lifting all that flour below.

Once I stepped inside one of the staff gave me a bow and the other gave me a huge chunk of their special Kouign Amann (see glorious pile of pastry above). And that’s the brief story of how they caught my heart and got me to stay and eat right there at the bakery.

The serving staff were all very friendlygirlThey were constantly chattering away and offering bread samples to people who came in so it just made you feel really welcome. It wasn’t crowded when I went there, which was a surprise considering the cronut’s celebrity status. But then again the cronuts were already sold out (it was barely lunchtime!) so that may or may not have been a coincidence.

But as famous as the Cronut is…it’s not the only thing worth coming for! In fact I’ve seen and heard about it so much that their other breads and pastries look even more special. There’re well over two dozen sweet treats on the menu, and most of them aren’t famous enough yet to have imitations popping up everywhere. But I do still want to try a Cronuthurhur

The cakes here are exquisite. It’s like eating abstract art.
